Symbolism: The tree is seen as a symbol of the complete yoga journey. The yamas and niyamas (ethical principles) are the roots of the tree; physical asana (poses) are the trunk; pranayama (breath) is symbolized by the leaves; pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) is the buds and dharana (fixed attention) is the sap of the tree; dhyana (meditation) is the blossoms; and samadhi (oneness with the universe) is the full fruit. Tree pose stands as a reminder to us to practice all eight limbs of yoga in order to experience the full benefit of the practice in our daily lives.
